34 people representing 27 zoos and businesses, including nutritionists, veterinarians, animal staff, and feed manufacturers met in Portland to discuss the nutritional needs of insectivorous species. After some introductory presentations on what is known and recent work, we had many fruitful discussions focused on topics such as feeding behaviors and food presentation, health issues in this group, what new (and old) food products are available or under development, how to assess the health and nutritional status of this unique group, and much more.
The current plan is to post a summary here soon, followed by a detailed proceedings paper(s) to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal in the not-too-distant future.
Many thanks to all the participants who contributed their time, expertise, and their institutions who helped support their travel!
The conference was generously sponsored by Busch Gardens Tampa and the San Antonio Zoo.
